There has not been for decades, maybe centuries, a more exciting time to be part of and invest in the entertainment industry. Yes, I know that the Great Recession has hampered or hammered nearly every corner of the entertainment arts world. But consider this. Even during and seemingly despite the biggest economic downturn in 80 years, the entire infrastructure that delivers entertainment is undergoing an unprecedented technology revolution.

Last week 80-year-old former Saudi oil minister, Sheikh Yamani put out a $200 to $300 barrel price as a possibility in the context of “something” happening in Saudi Arabia. Scary number from a serious guy. He was referring to “something” along similar lines as the political firestorm that started in Tunisia disrupting Saudi Aramco’s oil production that runs at 10 times the (now former) output of Libya’s oil fields.

It’s too early to predict the final outcome of the still unfolding accident at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear site that began with the heartbreaking tsunami on 3/11/11. But we do know several things; a) there is by any reasonable measure de minimus broad public risk, b) there will be substantial economic costs to Japan, and c) there will be long-run global energy impacts.

IBM’s supercomputer Watson performed quite a stunt on Jeopardy last week. A match between the two all-time human champs and some 200,000 watts of computing power took the man-machine challenge to a new level. The computer won, handily. But that’s not news.
